Winners of Ukraine's 'Sport Oscar' Are Unveiled at the Amazing Ceremony

Ukraine's best athletes, coaches, paralympic and non-Olympic sports' athletes of 2015 received their awards at the annual 'Heroes of Sport Year'.

The ceremony took place at the National Operetta on April 8th, 2016, welcoming dozens of start athletes and coaches, as well as politicians, show biz stars and media who came to celebrate the jubilee 10th 'Heroes'.

After greeting the Ukrainian Sports Academy members – the greatest nations' champions who annually make the last choice at every award's nomination – the guests had a chance to remember the awards' winner of 9 previous years, as well as the biggest successes of Ukraine's athletes in 2015.

Sergey Bubka opened the ceremony saying, 'When I was an athlete, I dreamt Ukrainian athletes would have the event like this. I've always been sure our athletes and coaches worth to be recognized and praised on the national level, to receive much moe publicity and media coverage. Time goes so quickly – we celebrate 10th anniversary of the celebration I once planned in my mind. Every year I walk on the 'Heroes' red carpet with the same special feelings and anxiety I experienced 10 years ago at the inaugural ceremony. 

Coming to awards, the first three were given by ex pro boxing champion and Kyiv major Vitaly Klitchko who handed the certificates apartments to three athletes – artistic gymnasts Oleg Verniaev and Ihor Radivilov and greco-roman wrestler Zhan Beleniuk. Klitchko said this gift has become possible due to joint efforts of Ukraine's NOC and his President Sergey Bubka, Ministry of Sport and Kyiv city government. He continued, 'As an athlete I know well how hard your job is. I know how important is to help athletes in their everyday life. I am so happy to motivate my counry's top athletes ahead of 2016 Olympics'.

A dozen of show biz celebrities joined sports' celebration perfoming at the 'Heroes' stage for the champions. Sergey Bubka has also expressed his gratitude to the sponsors and partners who provided their support to the ceremony and continue to support the Olympic movement and sport in Ukraine.

Ukraine's National Olympic Committee added the money prize total of 50 000 UAH for winners in three nominatios – 'Coach of the year', Male Athlete of the year', 'Female Athlete of the year' – to the gifts and prizes given by NOC partners to the awards winners.

Male athlete of the Year

Zhan Belenyuk – Greco-Roman wrestling, world championships gold, European Games silver (85 kg);

 

Female Athlete of the Year

Valentyna Semerenko – biathlon, world championships gold and bronze (mass start, sprint);

 

 

Coach of the Year

Hennadiy Sartynsky – artistic gymnastics, coaches Oleg Vernyaev;

 

Sensation of the Year

Pavlo Tymoshchenko – modern pentathlon, world championships gold medal;

 

Team of the Year

Men’s epee fencing team (Bohdan Nikishyn, Anatoliy Herei, Maxim Khvorost, Dmytro Kariuchenko) – world championships gold medal

 

 Strong spirit (Paralympic Athlete of the Year)

Dmytro Vynohradets – swimming, world championships four gold medals;

 

‘Along With Olympics’ (Non-Olympic Athlete of the Year)

Maria Muzychuk – chess, world champion;

 

Olympic Hope (Best Young Athlete of the Year)

Yulia Zhuravok – biathlon, junior world championships gold and bronze medals (individual, pursuit);

 

‘GLORY OF UKRAINE’S SPORT SPECIAL AWARD

Natalya Tymoshkina, handball goalkeeper, 1976 and 1980 Olympic gold medal winner

Sergiy Chukhray, kayak triple Olympic champion (1976, 1980)
