Sergey Bubka, Ukraine’s NOC President and IOC EB Member, welcomed the Executive Director of World Baseball Softball Confederation Michael Schmidt in NOC headquarters, Kyiv, on Wednesday, March 29th, to discuss sport development in the country.
Andriy Nikolaenko, President of the Federation Baseball Softball Ukraine, Federation’s Vice President Vasyl Kysil and Member of Ukraine’s Parliament Sergei Larin, who had been helping the development of these sports for years, joined the meeting. They discussed the growth of baseball and softball in Ukraine.
Sergey Bubka said the inclusion of baseball and softball into 2020 Olympics will help the sport to make next step. Bubka commented, ‘These sports have lots of advantages and lots of history and traditions. Young people love team games, which are instrumental to bring them outdoor and make them healthier and more competitive’.
Michael Schmidt claimed, ‘The support of governmental and non-governmental institutions is extremely important for developing baseball and softball. It will help us t involve more kinds to baseball/softball schools’.
Mr Bubka made a presentation of NOC’s activities and projects aimed at promoting sports and Olympic movement. He said, ‘We have Olympic Day and Week’ projects, as well as Olympic Lesson. We help publish dozens of sport-related books which are helpful to introduce Olympic sports, including baseball and softball, to people’.
