3-days Forum organized by the International Olympic Committee, the Olympic Council of Asia and the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa was held in Kuwait. Representatives from all 98 NOCs of Asia and Africa took part declaring a strong commitment to break down the gender equality barriers which still exist for women in sport.
An action plan to include women representatives in the committees at the sport governing bodies, to monitor women's participation in sport at all levels, and organize an Afro-Asian Women and Sport Forum every two years was draw up at the Forum.
Sergey Bubka, who is an IOC Executive Board member and President of the NOC of Ukraine, moderated Session 1 of the Forum where IOC members Nawal El Moutawakel, Anita L. DeFrantz and Astrid Aafjes, Founder and President of the 'Women Win' Organization, presented their speeches.
Giving start to the discussion, Bubka said, «I am sincerely proud that the NOC of Ukraine is the signatory to the Brighton Declaration, which, I believe, is a great initiative and an important tool for the promotion of women in sport.
Brighton Declaration on Women and Sport is addressed to all governments, public authorities and organizations to ensure that women are provided with opportunities to participate in sport in a safe and supportive environment.
The Forum here in Kuwait is a good example of how International Women and Sport strategy works in practice, how world, continental and regional leaders of sport and Olympic movement support international cooperation, share exemplary practices and model programs».
Sergey Bubka also praised Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah, President of the Olympic Council of Asia, and and Lassana Palenfo, the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa President, for organizing a high-profiled conference in Kuwait.
