Ukrainian women’s relay biathlon team (Vita Semerenko, Julia Dzhyma, Valentina Semerenko and Olena Pidhrushna) won country’s first gold medal of the Winter Olympics since figure skater Oksana Baul in 1994.
Sergey Bubka, who is a President of the Ukrainian NOC, commented on this win, «On behalf of our Olympic Team I would like to dedicate this win to the people of Ukraine. I believe that girls' amazing win would help to unite our nation and bring piece and harmony when we need it more than ever. I'm sure all the nation should proud and happy for the girls who have done a fantastic job to raise the national flag at the Olympics. We waited for this win for 20 years. Our team supported them at the stands of the 'Laure' Arena with black ribbons and slogans 'For Peace! For Ukraine!' at the national flags. Today is a great day for our country».
Sergey Bubka informed that he met biathletes and Ukrainian Biathlon Federation President Volodymyr Brynzak two days before the race. 'It was crucial to give them confidence, to help them to believe in themselves. That millions of fans in Ukraine are behind them in this race'.
