The NYOG emblem embodies and advocates the spirit of Olympics; reflects the richness of Chinese culture; and accurately conveys the theme of Nanjing 2014. The word “NANJING” is formed with the outlines of the gate of the ancient Chinese Ming Great Wall and typical south Chinese folk dwellings. These represent an inviting gateway, welcoming everyone to this jubilant, international youth event.
The mascot of Nanjing 2014 “NANJINGLELE” derives from a prestigious specialty of the host city, known as the “riverstone”. The graphic design of the mascot takes an imitation of the typical shape and appearance of this stone but in a creative and artistic way in purpose of catering to the youth’s taste, and meanwhile, highlights the colors from the emblem’s palette to achieve good congruity with the other brand elements.
The Youth Olympic torch was designed by the Vatti Corporation Ltd. The torch is known as the "Gate of Happiness." A structure resembling a city gate is found on the top part of the torch and the blue color of the torch represents the peaceful tranquility of Nanjing. The Changjiang River which flows next to Nanjing is presented as stripes found on the handle of the torch. It is said that the torch is capable of resisting wind speeds of 11 m/s, rainfall of 50mm/h, altitude of up to 4500m and a temperature range of -15˚C to 45˚C.
