The European Week of Sport takes place in countries across the Old World from September 23 to September 30.
This socially significant project, initiated by the European Commission, aims to promote sport and physical activity (#BeActive) in Europe and beyond.
The project's main focus is on maintaining a healthy lifestyle regardless of age, gender, background, or fitness level. Sport and physical activity significantly support citizens' health, and given the overall trend of decreasing physical activity levels, the European Week of Sport (EWOS) responds to this challenge and calls for collective action. The EWOS involves close cooperation with national coordinators and various partners who firmly support and contribute to the project's implementation.
The EWOS was launched 9 years ago. Ukraine first gained the right to join one of the largest EU initiatives in the field of physical culture in 2018. Since 2019, the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine has been the coordinator of the sporting event in Ukraine, and together with EWOS ambassadors, it initiates various activities to promote sport and encourage society to adopt a healthier lifestyle.
This year, the ambassadors for the European Week of Sport in Ukraine are champions and medalists from the XXXII Olympic Games held this summer in Paris: Olympic champion in team fencing and bronze medalist in individual fencing, Olga Kharlan; Olympic boxing champion Oleksandr Khyzhniak; Olympic champion in athletics Yaroslava Maguchikh; silver medalist in Greco-Roman wrestling Parviz Nasibov; and bronze medalist in athletics Iryna Herashchenko.
The European Week of Sport will kick off on September 23, 2024, in Vinnytsia, where an "Olympic Lesson" will be held with the participation of the President of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine, Vadym Guttsait, EWOS-2024 ambassador Iryna Herashchenko, and Olympians from Vinnytsia.
