The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko met Thomas Bach, the IOC President, at the Committee’s HQ in Lausanne, Switzerland. Sergey Bubka, IOC EB member and Ukraine NOC President, and Valery Borzov, IOC member and NOC Vice President, attended the meeting.
The attendees underlined that Olympic movement and its universal values matter a lot for every country uniting people regardless of their age, race, gender, religion and political preferences. Sport makes peace and destroying the barriers between people.
Ukraine's Head of the State spoke on the Olympic sport as an ambassador of peace naming Sergey Bubka as a role model in Ukraine whose achievements and role are acknowledged all over the globe.
The contribution of Ukraine into the history of the Olympic movement and the high status of the country's NOC were discussed at the meeting. Ukraine's athletes won 623 Olympic medals since 1952 Summer Games including 122 medals won since country gained its independence in 1991.
Mr Poroshenko spoke proudly of the iconic athletes Sergey Bubka, Andriy Shevchenko, Vitaly and Volodymyr Klychko who promote their native country in the world. He also sent the message of support to the idea of cooperation extension between Ukraine and the IOC.
Ukraine delegation also enclosed their gratitude for the IOC and President Bach who earlier raised $300 000 following the request from the National Olympic Committee to fund the preparation and travel expenses of country's top athletes.
Presidents Poroshenko and Bach agreed on coordination of their efforts to implement projects for sport education at secondary and high schools. The IOC President accepted President Poroshenko's invitation to visit Ukraine at a time convenient.
