Sergey Bubka, Ukraine’s National Olympic Committee President, awarded cycling tracker Lyubov Basova as Nation’s ‘Athlete of the Month’ in November 2016.
Olympic House in Kyiv hosted the traditional ceremony with Lyubov Basova received her career's second 'Athlete of the Month' award after being nominated in January 2011.
Basova won 2016 European Championships' gold medal in October 2016 in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, France, adding three UCI World Cup medals in November – two silver medals (keirin and individual sprint at the world Cup 1 in Glasgow, Great Britain) and gold medal in keirin in Apeldoorn, The Netherlands.
Sergey Bubka who awarded also Basova's coach Sergiy Bazin as 'Coach of the Month' praised the athlete at the ceremony, saying, 'Lyubov is persistent athlete and true professional. She produced extraordinary performance throughout the year making it to the final in keirin at the 2016 Rio Games and placing herself as high as 5th place. I am also happy to award coach Sergiy Basin who trained a number of outstanding female cyclists. He guided Iryna Yanovych to 2000 Games silver medal in sprint, adding also 2008 Beijing Games' bronze medal in individual pursuit for Lesya Kalytovska and 2015 European Games' silver medal for Hanna Solovey to his tally'.
Lyubov Basova spoke to media expressing her gratitude to the NOC which helped to purchase equipment for her bike. Basova said, 'I would never achieve those results without Mr Bubka's and his colleagues' continuous support. I am happy to perform well in 2016 and ready to go forward towards Tokyo 2020'.
