«UKRAINE HAS NEVER ACHIEVED GREATER SUCCESS AT THE WINTER GAMES»

Sergey Bubka gave a summary of the Team Ukraine’s performance in Sochi.

Early in the morning on Monday, February 24th, Olympic Team Ukraine arrived to Kyiv met by dozens of media, friends and athletes' family members. Ukraine won two medals in Sochi. Vita Semerenko has got bronze in biathlon sprint following by the winning performance of women's relay team in the same sport.

Asked to make a summary of Ukraine's performance at the Games Sergey Bubka who is a President of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine said, «It was a great success. It took 8 for our team to bring home Olympic medal at the Winter Games and 20 years to win a gold medal. We duplicated Lillehammer 1994 result but now we have four Olympic champions!».

«That relay victory was absolutely fantastic! IOC President Thomas Bach had all reasons to call it as standout moment of the Olympics, a powerful symbol of unity at the middle of crisis in our country. Me and Ukrainian Biathlon Federation President Volodymyr Brynzak met girls couple of days before the relay competition. We discussed issues of physical and mental preparation for the race. I shared my own sport experience. I told the girls 'This is going to be your day! Believe in yourself, you know well what to do. Later at the press conference after the race Olena Pidhrusha said this message motivated her at the last lap. It was amazing, I' really proud of the girls!»

Sergey Bubka also spoke on other athletes who performed well making top-10 in biathlon, freestyle skiing and figure skating. He also reminded that of 43 Olympic team members 24 competed at their first Olympics!

Commenting on how the political crisis in Ukraine affected the team's performance. Bubka said, «Obviously it was not easy to compete. We went through tough times knowing what happens in Ukraine, thinking on our families and friends. We started team meeting and relay team's press conference with the minutes of silence. We put black ribbons on our national flags at the Olympic village and wore them ta the Closing Ceremony. We sent our messages of mourn and support in the interviews and statements. I mean that every minute our hearts were with our people. We dedicated our winning performances to our country. I'm proud we brought glory to Ukraine at the 2014 Winter Olympics raising our flag at the Medal plaza. I believe that this Olympic success would become a good sign for the future of Ukraine».
