NOC of Ukraine celebrated one year to go until the 1st European Games in Baku

June, 12th is exactly one year to go until the 1st European Games in Baku (Azerbaijan), to be held in 2015.

National Olympic Committee of Ukraine did not stand aside this important event and also celebrated it.

The Vice-President of NOC of Ukraine, Olympic champion Valery Borzov, the Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports of Ukraine, two-time Olympic medalist Nina Umanets met with the Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Ukraine Einula Madatli and with the representatives of the Embassy. The meeting also attended a two-time Olympic medalist in judo Roman Hontyuk, the champion and two-time medalist of the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore in swimming Darina Zevina.

Mr. Madatli noted that sport consolidates and it was very pleasant for him to meet with a delegation of the Olympic Movement in Ukraine. "Today is an outstanding day. Today the countdown to the start of the first ever European games begins. Currently sports arenas in Baku that will take the best athletes in Europe, are almost ready. Many of them have already hosted and continue to host the international level competitions".

On behalf of the Olympic family Valery Borzov thanked the Ambassador for the warm welcome. "Baku is really changing every day, acquiring architectural development and prosperity. I am sure the competition will be held at the highest level" - said the vice-president of NOC. He also added that about 300 Ukrainian athletes are preparing for a competition at the 1st European games.

The Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports thanked the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan for the effective cooperation. "I greet you with the ability to conduct such a wonderful contest, because Baku is the first European city that will host a forum of such level. It's nice that in your country the Games became a real national idea"- said Nina Umanets.

The participants discussed the preparation of the host city, as well as the preparation process of our athletes to the first ever European games. At the end of the meeting the participants exchanged gifts and wished each other luck and success.

These days the delegation of Ukraine is in Baku at the workshop for chiefs de missions of member countries.

In general, the 2015 Games will be attended by more than 6000 athletes from 49 European countries, who will compete for 239 sets of medals in 19 sports. Namely, badminton, basketball 3x3, boxing, wrestling, cycling, water sports (water polo, swimming, diving, synchronized swimming), volleyball, rowing and canoeing, gymnastics (acrobatics, aerobics, jumping on the trampoline, artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics), judo, karate, athletics, beach soccer, table tennis, shooting, archery, triathlon, taekwondo, fencing. For some sports the Games will be a qualifying event to XXXI Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro 2016.

Currently the qualifying competitions are taking place for the European games.
