The IOC celebrates the 120th anniversary

June 23rd is a significant day for the global Olympic Family as the Olympic Day – a Foundation day of the International Olympic Committee is celebrated all over the world.

It was in 1894 in Paris when at the Sorbonne congress Pierre de Frédy, Baron de Coubertin initiated the revival of the Olympic Movement. For Ukraine it is a great honor that Olexiy Butovsky, our countryman from Poltava, has become one of the co-founders of the IOC contributing to the organization of the first Games in the late XIX century.

Sergey Bubka, Ukraine NOC President, IOC Executive Board member and IAAF Vice President, congratulated everyone who is involved in the movement, saying «The philosophy and the values of the Olympic Movement are unique and universal. They bring friendship, peace, tolerance, unity, mutual respect, democracy and fair play – exactly what our country needs right now».

The Olympic Day is celebrated in more than 200 countries annually.

In Ukraine up to 1 000 000 people, either athlete, administrators and sport lovers, are involved in the Olympic Day activities every year.
