Sergey Bubka: ‘2014 Youth Olympics promises successful future for Ukrainian sport’

Sergey Bubka, Ukraine NOC President, praised the performance of Team Ukraine at the II Summer Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China, commenting that the future of country’s sport looks to be successful.

Bubka said, 'First and foremost, I would like to thank to Ukraine's young Olympians who provided great sport performance at each of the 12 days of the Games. Ukraine won 29 medals, 9 of them gold medals – the outcome Ukraine could be proud of'.

'My words of gratitude are also for the coaches, physicians, national federations, NOC regional departments and Ukraine's Ministry of Sport and Youth – every person and organization who contributed a lot to the team's success. I owe my deepest thanks to the International Olympic Committee and President Thomas Bach, as well as to the European Olympic Committees and President Patrick Hickey. Dear friends, your continual support of Ukraine' sport in this tough time is a true demonstration of the Olympic solidarity'.

Bubka who is also IOC EB member and IAAF Vice President added that young athletes who were met with standing ovation at the 2014 YOG need the assistance and support of the national and non-governmental bodies within Ukraine.

He commented, 'Ukraine's youth athletes demonstrated their stamina and patriotism continuously at the Youth Olympic. They contested every second, every centimeter and every point, being the happiest teenagers in the world when Ukraine's flag was raised in Nanjing. I can't but mention star boxer, Olympic champion Oleksandr Usyk, Young Ambassador of Ukraine at the YOG. His participation was a unique experience for both him and the athletes as he has become their best friend and most emotional fan.

My message for every medalist and every participant of Team Ukraine at the II Summer YOG is not to rest on laurels but move forward. You should set new goals and make everything possible to achieve them. You are the future of Ukraine, of the sport, and the country is surely proud of you'.
