Cheban, bronze medalist in Beijing 2008 at C1 500 m and gold medalist in London 2012 at the C1 200 m, won C1 200 m event at the 2014 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championship in Moscow. In the final race the Ukrainian outscored Russian Korovashkov by merely 0,006 of a second.

Yuriy added silver medal at the C1 200 m relay along with his teammates Vitaly Goliuk, Oleksandr Maksymchuk and Vadym Tsipan to his medal tally in Moscow.

Bubka commented on Cheban's achievements saying, 'Yuriy is a unique athlete who continuously performs at the world highest level for a very long time. He has got into his first final race at the World Championships as early as in 2005 when he was only 19. At 20 he won first of his 6 World Championships medal. Hi medal tally includes also two Olympic medals. I wish this amazing consistency would bring him success at the 2016 Rio Games'.

Sergey Bubka also praised Cheban's coach and Ukraine Canoe Federation chaired by Oleksandr Kushnirenko for their contribution to the athletes' success.

Yuriy Cheban was previously awarded as the month's best athlete in Ukraine by the National Olympic Committee in August 2012 when he has won Olympic gold medal in London.
