June 16th, 2026

The Olympic House once again brought together the sporting community to honour the month’s best athletes and coaches. On 16 June, the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine held a formal awards ceremony for the winners of the traditional ‘Athlete of the Month’ competition, honouring representatives of artistic and rhythmic gymnastics, as well as freestyle wrestling, based on their performances in February and May 2026.

The award for ‘Best Athlete of February 2026’ went to Nazar Chepurnyi, who won a gold medal in the vault at the World Cup event in Cottbus, Germany. This is the athlete’s second accolade from the Olympic community. The trophy for Best Coach of February was presented to his personal coach, Hennadiy Sartynskyi.

In the May nominations, the women took the honours. Taisiia Onofriichuk was named the best female athlete of May 2026, having won bronze in the individual all-around at the European Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships in Varna (Bulgaria). Her personal coach, Iryna Deryugina, President of the Ukrainian Gymnastics Federation, was named Coach of the Month.

The title of best young athlete of May 2026 went to Maria Poltorak – silver medallist at the European Cadet Freestyle Wrestling Championships in the under-57kg weight category. Along with the young athlete, her personal coach, Oleksandr Podolskyi, also received the award.

The Ukrainian Gymnastics Federation, the Ukrainian Wrestling Association, and the Central Sports Club of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were also recognised for their work in preparing the winners of the Sports Month awards.

The President of the NOC of Ukraine and Olympic champion Vadym Guttsay congratulated the winners and praised the professional work of the coaches, thanked the journalists for covering the achievements of Ukrainian sport, and reminded everyone that the national teams are now facing the start of the qualification process for the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

“I wish our athletes consistency in their performances, as that is what matters most right now. Events like today’s are a wonderful opportunity to support the athletes and teams. And of course, we are infinitely grateful to the Ukrainian Defence Forces. It is thanks to our defenders throughout the years of war that Ukrainian athletes have the opportunity to compete on the international stage, win and raise our flag, which provides psychological support to the whole country during these difficult days,” emphasised Vadym Guttsait.

In their speeches, the winners and their coaches also expressed their gratitude first and foremost to the Ukrainian soldiers. They emphasised that thanks to the resilience of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, they are able to train at home, travel to international competitions and win under the blue and yellow flag.

We warmly congratulate the athletes and their coaches on this well-deserved recognition. Your achievements are an inspiration, setting an example for the younger generation and a source of pride for the whole country.
