About European Week of Sport

European Week of Sport takes place across Europe from 23 to 30 September.

This socially significant project was initiated by the European Commission and aims to promote sport and physical activity (#BeActive) in Europe and beyond.

Leading a healthy lifestyle regardless of age, gender, background and fitness level is the main focus of the project. Sport and physical activity significantly support people’s health, and as the overall trend in physical activity levels is declining, the ESW is responding to this challenge and calling for joint action. European Week of Sport involves close cooperation with national coordinators and a wide range of partners who strongly support and contribute to the project’s implementation.

EWS launched nine years ago. Ukraine was first granted the right to join one of the EU’s largest initiatives in the field of physical culture in 2018. Since 2019, the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine has acted as the coordinator of the sporting event in Ukraine, which, together with the EWS ambassadors, organises various events to promote sport and encourage the public to adopt a healthier lifestyle.

This year, the ambassadors for European Week of Sport in Ukraine are champions and medallists from the XXXIII Olympic Games, which took place this summer in Paris: Olympic champion in team fencing – Yulia Bakastova, Olympic boxing champion Oleksandr Khyzhniak, silver medallist in canoeing Lyudmyla Luzan, silver medallist in Greco-Roman wrestling Parviz Nasibov, and bronze medallist in athletics Iryna Herashchenko.
